the silicone material. Clinically significant postoperative opacification of hydrophilic acrylic IOL (model SC60B-OUV; Medical Developmental Research, Inc, Clearwater, Fla) has been reported. This has been reportedly due to the presence of granular deposits within the optic of the lens, which were naturally occurring calcium produced by the patient’s body. In our department we performed 8 cases of routine uneventful phacoemulsification with implantation of the Aquasense IOL (Ophthalmic Innovations, Inc) by 3 different surgeons between October and November 2000. This was a single-piece foldable hydrophilic acrylic IOL (water content, 25%). The patients in 5 of these cases had significant visual deterioration due to total opacification of the IOL more than a year after surgery. The whole lens had diffuse opacification within its substance and was uniformly distributed. All of them had a similar pattern of opacification with minimal variation. No apparent cause for the opacification of the IOL could be found. The company’s managing director in the United Kingdom was contacted (Ophthalmic Innovations, Inc, oral communication, November 2002). He explained that the opacification was due to an interaction between the silicone sleeve, used to hold the IOL in the vial, and the acrylic material of the IOL itself. This apparently imparted a negative charge to the IOL resulting in its opacification. To our knowledge no other case has been reported in the literature where the whole IOL has opacified. The company refused to give out “proprietary” information on the exact number of IOLs that had been implanted, but an educated guess would be over 500. Apparently all these IOLs have been withdrawn and a modified version without the silicone sleeve has been introduced. Apparently no opacification has been reported so far with this new version. We have had no further experience with this IOL.

Central serous chorioretinopathy and glucocorticoids.
Central serous chorioretinopathy is a relatively common retinal disease characterized by the accumulation of subretinal fluid at the posterior pole of the fundus, creating a circumscribed area of serous retinal detachment. It typically affects young and middle-aged men with no previous medical and family history, and no systemic symptoms or signs. However, it has been noted that central serous ...
متن کاملCentral serous chorioretinopathy treated with topical dorzolamide: A case series study
Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate the improvements of central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) treated with topical dorzolamide. These observational case studies included nine eyes of the nine patients with CSC, treated by a physician with topical dorzolamide consecutively over a one-month period. The central macular thickness and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) were measured...
متن کاملForgotten exogenous corticosteroid as a cause of central serous chorioretinopathy
Central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) is an idiopathic ocular condition - first described in 1866 - that is well known to ophthalmologists. It is less well known to other practitioners. Glucocorticoids have been strongly implicated as a pathogenic factor. We report three patients who developed CSCR following exogenous administration of corticosteroid. Because our patients did not suspect the ...
متن کاملHalf-dose verteporfin photodynamic therapy for bullous variant of central serous chorioretinopathy: a case report
INTRODUCTION Central serous chorioretinopathy is characterized by serous neurosensory detachment of the macula and it usually resolves spontaneously with good visual prognosis. In some patients, however, the serous retinal detachment might be very extensive and can result in bullous exudative retinal detachment. We evaluated the use of half-dose verteporfin photodynamic therapy for the treatmen...
متن کاملCentral serous chorioretinopathy and systemic corticosteroids in rheumatic diseases: report of three cases
BACKGROUND Central serous chorioretinopathy is a disorder often related to systemic corticosteroids, drugs commonly used in rheumatologists' clinical practice. Central serous chorioretinopathy prognosis is generally good but in some cases, it may lead to substantial loss of vision resulting in an important functional limitation for patients. It is very important to distinguish this pathology fr...
متن کاملHemorrhagic Macular Infarction after Intravitreal Bevacizumab for Chronic Multifocal Central Serous Chorioretinopathy
We hereby report a case of hemorrhagic macular infarction after intravitreal bevacizumab for chronic multifocal central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). Issues regarding safety and adverse effects of bevacizumab are discussed. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of hemorrhagic macular infarction after intravitreal bevacizumab for chronic multifocal CSC.
